I bought a new full frame camera, the Sony A7R2, to replace my aps-c Sony A77. The first time I used this camera was during new year’s eve, shooting the fireworks.
Fireworks are difficult to shoot. But I was very pleased of the quality of the images made by the A7R2. The main reason I switched cameras, was that I felt that it was the logical step to bring my image quality to the next level. Of course there is much to gain by improving my skill as well. But bringing a significantly better camera is an instant improvement, I simply couldn’t resist.
The A7R2 is an outstanding camera in many ways. It has more than twice the amount of megapixels of the A77. A much better dynamic range. It has a full frame sensor and is much smaller because it is not a true DSLR. Comparing it with Canon and Nikon options, I quickly came to the conclusion that Sony was technically the superior choice.
The only downside of the camera was that there were not that many lenses available for the new E-mount yet. This could be compensated by a A-mount converter, which I also bought. It works, but I’m not impressed by its performance. Focusing becomes a lot slower, which is undesirable for some situations. More lens options would become available in time, so I had to be patient. But the lenses that were available, are excellent quality.
For these fireworks I used the 28mm F2 lens, which has become my favorite because of its sharpness, speed, small size and all-round usable range. I took the photos from the balcony of my house.
